United Theological Seminary

Distance Learning

Get world-class progressive theological education from a distance. United’s Distance Learning options allow you to pursue our degree programs without relocating to the Twin Cities–while still enjoying the same level of academic excellence and community that United is known for.

HOW IT WORKS Most of our master’s level degree programs* can be completed fully from a distance. United uses Zoom-video conferencing technology, which allows you to participate in the on-campus experience no matter where you’re located. As opposed to many online courses, which lack real-time interaction, Zoom means that you will be able to watch lectures live and engage in classes discussions as if you were in the room.

We also regularly offer hybrid courses — three- or five-day in-person intensives — that fit even the busiest schedules. This gives you flexible options to complete your degree through hybrid courses and/or synchronous technology.

The DMin has minimal on-campus requirements, which are accomplished through hybrid courses.

*To be eligible for ordination in the UMC, students pursuing the MDiv in Methodist Studies must take all courses on campus as residential students. Consequently, courses taken through our hybrid or online-Zoom options will not count toward UMC ordination. Also, the concentration courses for the MAL and MDiv in Spiritual Direction must be taken at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota
