A Note from Chair of the Presidential Search Committee
Dear United community,
The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the national search for our next President. Rev. Dr. Molly T. Marshall will retire in June 2027 following a successful six-year tenure marked by expanded degree programs, stabilized finances, and growth of the student body.
United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities has composed a Presidential Search Committee of trustees and representatives from the student body, alums, faculty, and staff to engage in faithful preparation ahead of the public search for President Marshall’s successor. To support this important call for the next President, United has engaged the executive search firm Isaacson, Miller (IM) as a partner in helping the seminary step into the next chapter of United’s mission and ministry.
Founded as an ecumenical graduate school of the United Church of Christ, United has a rich history of activism, parish and denominational leadership development, and rigorous scholarship. In recent years, the school has assumed a national presence with its innovative hybrid and online degree and certificate programs that have attracted nearly 300 students from across the country, moving it to a prominent tier among theological seminaries. This page will serve as a welcome and gateway for interested leaders to view basic information about the United, the President’s role, and other aspects of interest that will describe the operational, philanthropic, and missional life of the seminary. Periodic search updates will be posted here for the benefit of the United community.
We are seeking an engaged leader who will join our mission to inspire creative scholarship, advance innovative pedagogy, develop leaders of distinction, and move the school forward to increased sustainability and global impact.
Leaders from interfaith and ecumenical traditions, academic disciplines, relevant professional and denominational roles, and innovators in educational practices are invited to consider this unique opportunity. United seeks a visionary, relational, and theologically grounded leader to serve as its next President. This is an opportunity to lead one of the most distinctive institutions in theological education: a progressive seminary rooted in the Christian tradition and shaped by a deep commitment to justice and interreligious engagement. United has emerged as a place where students from a wide range of faith traditions, spiritual identities, and vocational callings come to be formed as leaders.
The next president is charged with guiding a seminary that has emerged from a period of significant transformation and now seeks to build on growing enrollment, renewed financial strength, and a distinctive identity within theological education.
