Assistant or Associate Professor of Pastoral and Spiritual Care and Director of the Interreligious Chaplaincy Program
United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities invites applications for a tenure-track position in Pastoral and Spiritual Care who would also serve as Director of the Interreligious Chaplaincy Program, the seminary’s largest and fastest-growing program. The start date could be as soon as July 1, 2026, but is reasonably flexible.
We seek a visionary scholar-teacher whose research engages the rapidly changing landscape of spiritual care in North America and whose pedagogy promises to prepare United’s increasingly interreligious student body for a life of justice-oriented service and care in a variety of settings. Primary responsibilities include teaching four courses per academic year (full-time faculty teach a five-course load with a course release for program directors) and administrative oversight of the Interreligious Chaplaincy Program.
Courses include “Introduction to Pastoral and Spiritual Care,” “Interreligious Chaplaincy,” “Intercultural Chaplaincy,” and “Chaplains at Work: Exploring Systems, Values, and Ethics.” The program director role includes—among other administrative responsibilities—curricular design and assessment, student retention, and collaboration in student recruitment efforts. Regular faculty expectations also include scholarly activity, student advising, and institutional service. The current salary for professors at the assistant level is $66,405, and the salary at the associate level is $74,741. United offers excellent benefits, including health, dental, life, and disability insurance; generous retirement contributions; professional development; and paid leave for vacation, sick, and holiday.
Qualified applicants will hold a PhD or equivalent in spiritual care, pastoral theology, or an adjacent field. PhD candidates who expect to complete their degree within one year of the start date may also be considered. Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching in a liberal, religiously pluralistic seminary with a significant LGBTQIA+ student population and should be student-centered, and prioritize adept teaching practices, including online teaching. Ideal candidates will have experience in a professional chaplaincy context and will have awareness of the changing nature of the chaplaincy field. Competencies should include some combination of interreligious and intercultural fluency as pertinent to chaplaincy. This position requires living in or relocating to the Twin Cities area.

Wilson Yates Chair in Theology and the Arts; Assistant or Associate Professor and Program Director for Theology and the Arts
United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities invites applications for an endowed, tenure-track position in Theology and the Arts. This person would also serve as program director for Theology and the Arts. The start date could be as soon as July 1, 2026, but is reasonably flexible.

Exemplary candidates will demonstrate competence in the intersection of theology and culture and the integration of the arts in worship, ritual, spirituality, and social transformation.

Qualified applicants will hold a PhD in theology and the arts or a related field—e.g., liturgical theology, practical theology, art history, aesthetics, arts and culture, or religious studies. PhD candidates who expect to complete their degree within one year of the start date will also be considered, as well as candidates who hold both a DMin and a graduate degree in the arts. Courses include “Art, Religion, and Contemporary Culture,” “History of Arts and Theology,” “Arts Praxis,” and “Arts for Leadership.”
Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching in a liberal, religiously pluralistic seminary with a significant LGBTQIA+ student population. Candidates should be student-centered and prioritize adept teaching practices, including online teaching. Candidates should be able to articulate a trajectory of research interests and demonstrated capacity for publication. This position requires living in or relocating to the Twin Cities area.
