“Witness and Hope Reimagined” Exhibit with Rev. Loren McGrail

Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt,
and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.
Leonardo Da Vinci
Through poetry, prayer, and art, Rev. Loren McGrail documents events in the life of Palestinians under violence, occupation, and genocide. Loren was a mission co-worker for Global Ministries of the United Church of Christ and Disciples of Christ for five years in Israel and Palestine, 2013–2018. The cover art for this event is titled “Eid Mubarak.”
This exhibit includes writings and artwork completed during her service in those years, up to the present.
Excerpt from “Play With Them”
Release the captives Isaiah said
and Jesus too even Netanyahu but
this is not enough
because you can’t un-cease
their horrific deaths
their parent’s hollow eyes
Lord, they say you were born in the rubble
please find our children
hold them
play with them
until it’s over
- On Wednesday, November 4, join us at 6:30–8:30 PM CT for a panel discussion of “Witness and Hope Reimagined ” with Loren McGrail in dialogue with Dr. Jen Maidrand, and one other panelist as we reflect on the humanitarian crisis and genocide in Gaza. We will consider how art can inform, challenge, and offer glimpses of truths that might not otherwise be seen.
- On Tuesday, November 10, we will host an Arts Luncheon, from 11:45 AM–12:45 PM CT, “Art Making as Compassionate Witness: Assemblage and Collage in a Time of Deep Grief and Genocide.” Come to learn and make your own art. Supplies will be provided, including broken pottery shards from Palestine and photos to work from or be used in your piece.
- On Thursday, November 12, we are offering a Gallery Walkthrough with Loren McGrail, from 11:00 AM–12:00 PM. Walk through the exhibition with the artist as she offers an in-depth description and timeline of the artwork.
