SUMMARY:Book Launch with Dr. Pat Browne: Seed Corn Must Not Be Ground
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, June 10\, at 6:30 PM to celebrate the official launch of Seed Corn Must Not Be Ground: A Memoir of Survival and Resilience\, the remarkable new book authored by our own Dr. Pat Browne. \n“While Pat was waiting to be born\, her mother descended into madness. Living under non-negotiable requirements of perfection and cleanliness\, Pat and her four younger siblings faced rules and expectations that opposed all notions ‘of the perfect Catholic family’—the desired outward illusion. Sleeping perfectly still ‘like pieces of paper slipped into an envelope\,’ so as not to rumple the bed sheets\, eating the same small meals every single day\, and requiring permission to use the bathroom was both Pat’s normal and her best guarded secret. In a harrowing yet quietly hopeful memoir\, Pat explores the internal contours of a life shaped by trauma. Extending beyond the bounds of an individual’s story to reflect holistically about what it means to be human\, Seed Corn Must Not Be Ground’s overarching preoccupation is the problem and meaning of suffering. Structured by a unique braiding of memory and spirituality\, the book ponders profound human questions about pain and loss\, grief and sorrow\, resilience and healing. In language simultaneously wrenching and beautiful\, Browne reveals depths of wisdom for understanding and responding to the question of\, ‘Where was God in all of that?’ ” \nModerated by Dr. Demian Wheeler\, our Sophia Associate Professor of Religion and Theological Studies\, a panel will respond to Pat’s publication: \n\nRev. Dr. John Thatamanil\, our 2025 commencement speaker and the professor of Theology and World Religions at Union Theological Seminary\, will serve as the outside responder and join us onsite.\nRev. Dr. Andrew Packman\, United’s assistant professor of Theological Ethics and Formation and program director for Formation\, will offer the faculty response.\nRyan McLaughlin (’26)\, a new alum\, will provide the student response and join us from Zoom.\n\nThis event will be on campus and accessible through Zoom. In-person attendees can enjoy light refreshments. \nJune 2 update: Now that the book is officially published\, here is a link from the publisher you can use to purchase a copy. The book is also available at Amazon\, IndieBound\, or Barnes & Noble. Copies will be available for purchase at the event as well! \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Screening at Riverview Theater: “The Doctrine”
DESCRIPTION:United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities’ Leadership Center for Social Justice and the Hawkinson Fund for Peace and Justice are delighted to invite you to a special film screening of The Doctrine. The screening will take place on Wednesday\, June 17\, at the Riverview Theater in Minneapolis. Doors will open at 6:30 PM. The screening starts at 7:00 PM; afterward\, you can stay for a Q&A conversation with filmmaker Gwendolen Cates and featured activists Mitch Walking Elk and Nina Berglund.  \nThe Doctrine explores the legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery that “sanctified” violence against Indigenous Peoples\, land\, and water in the Americas and worldwide. The film’s central narrative follows a group of Indigenous youth from the Twin Cities who travel to the Vatican to confront the Catholic Church about its role in promoting the Doctrine. The film also exposes how the Doctrine has targeted communities of color around the world for centuries. Even now\, it enables corporate forces to plunder natural resources and exacerbate the climate crisis. \nThe Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery is hosting this event. We are delighted to co-sponsor this event with the following organizations: \nCreekside United Church of Christ\nCSJ Indigenous Awareness/Land Justice Futures Committee\nCenter for Sustainable Justice\nTwin Cities Veterans for Peace\nAmerican Indian Movement\nThe National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition\nMN Conference of the United Church of Christ\nHeadwaters Foundation for Justice\nMinnesota Interfaith Power & Light\nSt. Joan of Arc Catholic Community \nClick here to learn more and watch a trailer. \nClick here to reserve your ticket!
