SUMMARY:Social Transformation Lunch—Easter as Uprising
DESCRIPTION:“There has been a tendency to spiritualize resurrection\, softening how radical and disruptive an act of resistance and justice it is. Some of our ancient spiritual forebears bore witness to the empty tomb as an uprising\, an ongoing\, embodied witness of getting up again and again in resistance to all that opposes abundant life.” Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis. \nJoin us after Chapel on Thursday\, April 9\, for a lunchtime conversation with Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis between 12:45 and 1:30 PM. Rev. Dr. Davis will lead a conversation reflecting on “Easter as Uprising.” Bring your own lunch and join the discussion in the Intersection on campus or on Zoom. This event is hosted by United’s Social Transformation Program and its Leadership Center for Social Justice. \nRev. Dr. DeWayne Davis is ordained by the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches and has served as the lead minister at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis\, with expertise in social justice analysis\, advocacy\, and organizing. As an adjunct professor at United\, he teaches “Preaching and Your Public Voice” and “The Formed and Transformed Leader.” Rev. Dr. Davis is also a member of United’s Board of Trustees. \nJoin us online at 12:45 PM CDT on April 9 at this Zoom link. >

SUMMARY:Justice and Joy: Empowering Religious Support for Trans Lives
DESCRIPTION:In a time when trans lives are under direct attack\, LGBTQ leaders are pushing back and inviting more allies to speak up about our religious identity. Join other people of faith at United—on May 30\, 2025\, starting at 9:00 AM—to learn how to lift your voice effectively in large and small ways that are authentic to your beliefs and tradition. We are delighted to share that we will be hearing from many important voices in this discussion\, including Rabbi Arielle Lekach-Rosenberg\, Rabbi Heather Renetzky\, Rev. T. Michael Rock\, Rev. Nora Elliott (’17)\, Rev. Karen Hutt\, Dallas Rising\, Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis\, Rep. Leigh Finke\, Rev. Oby Ballinger\, Justin Lewandowski\, Seth Anderson-Matz (’24)\, Rev. Dr. Ry Siggelkow\, Allison Connelly-Vetter\, Chelsea Boyden (’25)\, and Rev. Dr. Rebecca Voelkel (’13). \nWe will remember what our traditions teach about affirming diverse genders. Then we will learn practical ways to take action at the legislature\, in public forums\, and with our faith communities. There will also be plenty of opportunities for networking and celebrating with others whose faith calls them to work for trans liberation. \nHere’s the schedule for the day: \n\n\n\n9:00 AM\n\nOpening Ritual/Workshop\n\n\n9:30 AM\n\nWelcome\n\n\n9:40 AM\n\nOpening Address: Why We Are Here\n\n\n10:20 AM\n\nBreak\n\n\n10:30 AM\n\nFaith-based Small Groups\n\n\n11:30 AM\n\nReconnect and Share\n\n\n12:00 PM\n\nLunch\n\n\n1:00 PM\n\n  \n\n\nHow-to Workshop \n\nCreating an Op-Ed/Communications\nConnecting with Elected Officials\nOrganizing Your Family or Faith Community\nCreating a Trans-Inclusive Ministry Setting\n\n\n\n\n1:45 PM\n\nHow-to-Workshop\n\n\n2:30–3:00 PM\n\nClosing and Next Steps\n\n\n\n  \nAfter the day’s activities\, join us for Queer Prom. SUMMARY:Social Transformation Lunch: “Post-Inauguration Conversation”
DESCRIPTION:Are you feeling anxious\, fearful\, and hopeless since the election? Oppressive power seeks to render us powerless by creating confusion and isolating us from one another. Join us for a theological conversation about our current conjuncture and what might be on the horizon nationally and globally. How are you “discerning the spirits” and what does it look like for you to act faithfully with others today? \nGather onsite and online with Rev. Dr. Ry Siggelkow\, director of United’s Leadership Center for Social Justice\, and Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis\, director of our Social Transformation program\, for a conversation about this fraught moment in US history and how we can move through grief and anger to affirm the exigency of justice. \nJoin Us Via Zoom >
