SUMMARY:Reweaving Earth & Soul: A Conversation with Leah Rampy
DESCRIPTION:Climate chaos and ecosystem losses are growing; we live amidst beauty and sorrow. We have frayed our ties with this wondrous\, beloved Earth\, and that is breaking our hearts. Spirit beckons us to the depth of our souls to reclaim our birthright of kinship with all living beings. Within that holy web\, we might learn to lay stepping stones toward a future of greater mutual flourishing and well being. We hope you can join us on September 28 at 4:00 PM for a conversation with Dr. Leah Rampy about living more deeply connected in these edge times. \n\nLeah Rampy is a writer\, speaker\, and retreat leader who weaves ecology\, spirituality\, personal stories\, and practices to help others deepen their relationship to the natural world. She is the author of the award winning Earth & Soul: Reconnecting amid Climate Chaos and a frequent speaker on spiritual ecology and leadership in these uncertain times. (This book is available for purchase at a reduced price through The Ministry Lab. Contact Rev. Emily Meyer to reserve your copy and arrange for pick-up.)\n \n\n\n\nThrough Shepherd University’s Lifelong Learning Program\, Leah teaches classes on ecology through the lens of current writers. Her essays on living more fully connected to Earth in these uncertain times have appeared in the Anthology of Appalachian Writers (Barbara Kingsolver edition)\, The Cardinal Anthology Vol 1\, and Soul Food; Nourishing Essays on Contemplative Living and Leadership. She is a member of West Virginia Writers. \nLeah holds a doctorate in Curriculum from Indiana University. She has extensive leadership experience as an executive in Fortune 100 organizations and in nonprofits and has offered executive coaching and consulting to individuals and organizations through the business she founded in 2001\, Illumined Way\, LLC. \nRegistration Deadline: September 27\, 2024

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture with Rev. Dr. Gary Dorrien
DESCRIPTION:United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in St. Paul are jointly sponsoring a lecture by the highly esteemed American theologian and ethicist Rev. Dr. Gary Dorrien. The free event will take place at 6:30 PM on September 25\, in the main church at St. John’s and be live-streamed on St. John’s YouTube channel. \nDorrien\, the Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary and Professor of Religion at Columbia University\, will base his lecture around two of his recent publications: Anglican Identities: Logos Idealism\, Imperial Whiteness\, Commonweal Ecumenism and the autobiographical Over from Union Road: My Christian-Left-Intellectual Life. Both books have a 2024 publication date. \nIn Anglican Identities\, Dorrien offers a comprehensive historical examination of Anglicanism\, encompassing the faith’s longstanding proclivity toward ecumenicalism and idealist approaches. He also argues that the religion’s aspirational ecumenical vision is directly antithetical to English Anglican’s entanglement with colonialism and white supremacy.  \nOver from Union Road\, on sale September 30\, is a rich memoir that describes Dorrien’s unlikely journey from being an academically inattentive high school athlete to becoming a renowned social ethicist\, theologian\, and intellectual historian. The book also covers Dorrien’s participation in the civil rights movement and other social and cultural upheavals during his lengthy career.  \nDorrien will also participate in United’s Fall Convocation on September 26 as he joins us to celebrate the installation of his former student\, Dr. Demian Wheeler\, into the new Sophia Chair in Religious and Theological Studies. The Lecture at St. John’s and United’s Fall Convocation are completely free to attend! \nView the venue address and information below.

SUMMARY:Connection\, Care\, and Conscience: Voting Our Values
DESCRIPTION:As an American people\, we are facing an important decision in November when we vote to elect the next President of the United States. We are living in a political moment that has produced fear and anxiety for many. With the election looming in the midst of political polarization\, it can be tempting to simply pick a side (red or blue) because we feel like we are supposed to\, or worse\, withdraw from participating in the political process altogether. \nAnd yet\, as people of faith and values\, we remain responsible for embodying ethical leadership as we engage diverse communities and the wider public. Join us for a non-partisan conversation as we explore the values and commitments we bring to voting and our community work. The event includes a workbook that you can use to examine your own beliefs and decisions.  \nWe hope you can join us in person or online through the link below.

SUMMARY:“Radiance of the Body: Spirituality in the Art of Keith Haring” | Faculty Lecture with Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis
DESCRIPTION:Artist Keith Haring used multiple symbols to convey spirituality in his art\, most commonly a series of lines to depict radiance\, which were applied to everything from the Christ child in his nativity to explicit images of sexuality. Angels appear darting about in all kinds of circumstances\, as do crosses\, priests\, and other religious symbols. What does this broad application of holiness to a wide range of subjects tell us about Haring’s understanding of spirituality? \n\n\nHosted in the art gallery of Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church\, this talk by Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis will explore Haring’s religious background and his liberated and freeing view of sexuality and spirituality. We will look at examples in the current show\, Keith Haring: Art is for Everybody at the Walker Art Center\, as well as other examples of Haring’s work.\n\n\nRev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis\nAssociate Professor of Christian Ethics and Social Transformation\, Program Director for Social Transformation\nRev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis is an associate professor of Christian ethics and social transformation supported by the McVay Endowment and the director of the Social Transformation program at United Theological Seminary. He earned his PhD from the Graduate Theological Union in Interdisciplinary Studies in addition to a Master of Divinity degree at Harvard Divinity School and a Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary. \nAs a pastor\, he served congregations in Boston\, Honolulu\, and San Francisco and was Director of Leadership Development for Metropolitan Community Churches; he is now with the United Church of Christ. \nIn his prior work\, he served as Managing Director at the Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion (CLGS) and directed communications for the Hawai’i Equal Rights Marriage Project\, the National Center for Transgender Equality\, and Out & Equal Workplace Advocates. He has taught at the University of Arizona\, Pima Community College\, Iliff School of Theology\, and Pacific School of Religion. He lives in Minnesota with his husband\, Henry\, and their two dogs. \nLearn more >

SUMMARY:United Days
DESCRIPTION:We are living through perilous and divisive times. The idea of building walls that keep “us” safe from “them” is as much a vexing spiritual and theological problem as it is a social and political one. \nHow might faith leaders and congregations courageously and creatively engage in socially transformative action from a place of spiritual grounding and depth? How might compassionate listening and radical imagination help us forge new connections across lines of difference\, build a more just world with others\, and facilitate a “revolution of values\,” rather than fuel the flames of fear\, hatred\, and exclusion? \nWe are excited to welcome you back May 9 and 10 as we explore these questions together in plenary sessions and workshops. \n\nSusan Draper White and Keynote Speaker\nJoy Ladin is a widely published author\, essayist and poet\, literary scholar\, and nationally known speaker on transgender issues. From 2003 to 2021\, she held the David and Ruth Gottesman Chair in English at Stern College for Women of Yeshiva University; her gender transition and return to teaching in 2008 made her the first openly transgender employee of an Orthodox Jewish institution. \nSince coming out as transgender in 2008\, Joy has become a nationally recognized speaker on transgender issues. She has been featured in many National Public Radio interviews\, most notably “On Being with Krista Tippett\,” which has been rebroadcast three times\, as well as numerous interviews and profiles in numerous publications. \nJoy holds a PhD in American Literature from Princeton University\, where she was awarded the Porter Ogden Jacobus Fellowship as top graduate student in the Humanities\, an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst)\, and a BA from Sarah Lawrence College. SUMMARY:Flamy Grant in Concert
DESCRIPTION:We are beyond excited to announce that United will host award-winning drag songwriter and singer\, Flamy Grant\, for a performance on April 10 at 7:00 PM.  \nBillboard-charting artist Flamy Grant\, describes herself as a “shame-slaying\, hip-swaying\, singing-songwriting drag queen from western North Carolina.” Her 2022 debut record\, Bible Belt Baby\, was nominated for best pop album at the San Diego Music Awards\, reached the top spot on iTunes Christian Charts (a first for a drag performer)\, and was named as one of the Top Ten Queer Country Albums of 2023 by Rainbow Rodeo Magazine. “Good Day\,” a single from the album\, debuted at number 20 on the Billboard Christian digital sales chart.  \nAmong other accomplishments\, Flamy won the 2023 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition\, was nominated for a 2023 QueerX award\, and has been featured in Rolling Stone\, Entertainment Weekly\, and People. Her music has more than 750\,000 streams on Spotify\, Apple\, and Amazon music. Much of Flamy’s music focuses on the queer spiritual journey with stories of resilience and recovery from religious trauma in a world where LGBTQ+ people are too often ignored by\, harmed in\, or ejected from religious spaces. \nRev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis\, associate professor of social transformation and leadership\, shares\, “Drag has a long and established history in the performing arts and as a form of personal expression. It is also a means of resistance against oppressive gender and sexual norms; after all\, the first person to use the term ‘drag queen\,’ William Dorsey Swann\, was also the first to organize and petition the US government for rights for sexual and gender minorities.” \nLearn more about Flamy via United student Amanda Schultz’s profile published by the LGBTQ Religious Archive Network. \nUnited students\, faculty\, and staff can attend this special event for no cost (or a donation). Non-United students pay just $5.00; guests who come with United faculty and staff\, and other community members\, can enjoy the show for $10.00. Space is limited! SUMMARY:Caregivers in a Care-less Society: A Panel on Care Work and Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:What difference would it make if the many caregivers of our world—doulas\, chaplains\, mothers\, fathers\, grandmothers\, pastors\, nurses\, doctors—accompanying those with whom they care\, worked together to transform our careless social structures?  \nWhat if the remedy to widespread caregiver burn-out was to be found in building infrastructures of care rather than in promoting marketized practices of self-care? \nThe COVID-19 pandemic reminded us of our dependence on one another for life and\, perhaps especially\, our collective need for care. It made visible the radical inequalities produced by a social and economic system that prioritizes profit over people. As many have noted\, those who were most at risk of infection and death from the virus—elderly\, poor\, disabled\, incarcerated\, migrants\, unhoused people—received little support from existing public infrastructure or were neglected and abandoned altogether.  \nAnd yet\, we live in a society of many caregivers. We have caring professionals (nurses\, doctors\, midwives\, doulas\, pastors\, chaplains\, therapists\, social workers\, etc.) and unpaid caregivers (friends\, parents\, communities of faith\, etc.). How do our careless systems and structures affect our caregivers and those for whom they provide care? How might reflecting on experiences in caregiving help us reimagine a more caring social life? What is the role of caregivers in the struggle for a more just world? \nTo discuss these questions further\, we are delighted to welcome four panelists who are experts in medical care work and social justice: \nRev. Dr. Jessica Chapman Lape \nRev. Dr. Jessica Chapman Lape is United’s assistant professor and program director for interreligious chaplaincy who received her PhD in Practical Theology from California’s Claremont School of Theology. Jessica’s research inhabits the intersection of spiritual care\, healthcare\, and reproductive justice. Her dissertation\, missTreated: A Womanist Clinical Pastoral Theology on the Mistreatment of African American Women in U.S. Healthcare\, explores Black women’s perception of cultural violence in U.S. healthcare systems and the subsequent role of spiritual care in interrupting such violence. Jessica’s current research is working to expand paradigms of clinical spiritual care to include contextualized spiritual care practices such as Black indigenous birthwork. \nDr. Michael Westerhaus \nDr. Westerhaus\, who graduated from Harvard Medical School in 2006\, practices at HealthPartners’ Center for International Health. “As a medical anthropologist\,” Dr. Westerhaus writes\, “I am very interested in understanding the impact of socioeconomics and culture on health and illness. In my role as a member of the global health faculty at the University of Minnesota\, I work both here in Minnesota and in northern Uganda to improve community-based primary care delivery\, teach about the social determinants of health\, and build partnerships based upon respect and equality that advance health for all.” He is also on the leadership committee of EqualHealth. \nDr. Aarti Bhatt \nAarti Bhatt is an assistant professor of internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Minnesota\, where she completed a chief residency year in Global Health. She is also an associate program director for the Med-Peds residency program and works as a primary care physician at the Community University Health Care Center (CUHCC). She is an active member of the Social Medicine Consortium and does community organizing through the Equal Health Campaign Against Racism (which also has a Minnesota chapter). Dr. Bhatt is a founding board member for Minnesota Doctors for Health Equity. She has a particular interest in using narrative health and community centered approaches to dismantle the social forces of systemic racism that drive health inequity.  \nRev. Laura Cannata \nRev. Laura Cannata (a 2013 United alum) is a Disability Justice Minister at Robbinsdale Parkway UCC. She is also on the Disability Ministries’ Board of Directors for the National UCC. She lives with chronic illnesses and mental health issues but is disabled by attitudes and societal structures. She speaks the truth to power and writes prophetic poems. She quotes the Bible almost as much as she quotes The Lord of the Rings and loves both people and animals. \nRegister below:

SUMMARY:Chaplaincy & Reproductive Justice: A Conversation on Intersections
DESCRIPTION:Practitioners and pastors who are engaged in chaplaincy and spiritual care are invited\, now more than ever\, to consider how their role as spiritual care providers can support social justice efforts within their institutions and communities. \n“Chaplaincy & Reproductive Justice: A Conversation on Intersections\,” led by Rev. Dr. Jessica Chapman Lape\, creates space for spiritual care providers\, chaplains\, and chaplaincy students to explore the intersections of spiritual care and a critical and timely topic in social justice: reproductive justice. The reproductive justice framework advocates for a person’s right to have a child\, the right to not have a child\, and the right to raise children in safe and healthy environments. In this presentation\, we will explore how the reproductive justice framework informs the spiritual care practices of professional spiritual care providers in healthcare and community-based settings. \nRegister below. \n\n \n\nPanelists\nRev.
