DESCRIPTION:The Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (AWAB) is delighted to welcome Rev. Dr. William Stell as its 2026 Lecturer. United is hosting the Lecture on Friday\, September 18\, starting at 6:30 PM CT. Dr. Stell—whose lecture is titled “The Power of Queer Religious History”—is a historian of religion and sexuality and currently serves as an affiliate fellow at Princeton University’s Center for Culture\, Society\, and Religion. He previously taught at New York University. Before earning his PhD from Princeton University\, he served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Bordentown\, New Jersey. He is ordained in the United Church of Christ. \nIn case you didn’t know\, Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis was AWAB’s 2025 Lecturer. SUMMARY:2026 Fall Convocation: The Installation of Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis into the Wilson Yates Chair in Theology and the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Each fall\, the United community welcomes the beginning of a new academic year and\, with it\, celebrates new faculty and institutional milestones. This year\, we will gather to formally celebrate the installation of Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis as the first-ever occupant of the Wilson Yates Chair in Theology and the Arts. \nBefore joining United’s faculty\, Dr. Sabia-Tanis served as congregational minister\, community organizer\, advocate\, and teacher. He is exceedingly well educated and experienced in his field\, having received his PhD from Graduate Theological Union\, his DMin from San Francisco Theological Seminary\, and his MDiv from Harvard Divinity School. As a theologian and scholar\, he has focused much of his work on the intersection of art and LGBTQ+ religious identity and published notable books and articles. Until his appointment to this chair\, he served faithfully as the McVay Associate Professor of Christian Ethics and Social Transformation as well as Program Director for Social Transformation. \nThe Wilson Yates Chair in Theology and the Arts was established by generous gifts from friends\, alums\, and former United faculty members. The endowed chair’s namesake\, Rev. Dr. Wilson Yates\, is United’s celebrated President Emeritus and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Religion\, Society\, and the Arts. News of Dr. Sabia-Tanis’s appointment was announced this summer and widely celebrated by his colleagues as well as current and former students. \nThis free event will take place on Thursday\, September 24\, at 12:15 PM CT. SUMMARY:Book Launch and Panel for "Howard Thurman: Reflections on a Luminous Life"
DESCRIPTION:This event is a book launch and panel on Howard Thurman. Adjunct faculty member Dr. Curtiss Paul DeYoung has edited a new book titled Howard Thurman: Reflections on a Luminous Life\, out in September 2026\, written by his protege James Earl Massey.  \nThis biography and assessment of Thurman’s thought was originally written in the 1970s. Howard Thurman was an active participant with author Massey in the content. The book was never published. Now\, 50 years later\, the book is available to the public with additional editorial commentary by Dr. DeYoung. \nThis launch event for the book includes a panel discussion on the importance of Howard Thurman for today. Panelists are: \n\nUnited adjunct faculty member and DMin alum Dr. Tamice Spencer-Helms (’26);\nFounding Pastor of New City Church Rev. Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes\n2026 Picard Lecture on Environmental Theology and Ethics  \nRev. Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes—earth thinker\, theologian\, liturgist\, performer\, artist\, and playwright\, a native Brazilian from São Paulo—is the Marylin Seven Endowed Chair in Religion and the Arts at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. In the Spring of 2023\, Carvalhaes received his Full Professorship at Union Seminary. In the Summer of 2023\, Carvalhaes received the Honorary Degree Sacrae Theologiae Doctor bestowed by the Board of Trustees of Starr King School for the Ministry. \nIn the Fall of 2023\, Carvalhaes received the award for The Most Creative Play at the New York Theater Festival with his play When Wajcha Meets Pachamama. Marshall\n \n\n\n\n\n  \nTuesday\, October 27\nFaithful Resistance in Practice \nPeople of faith and conscience were very visible during Operation Metro Surge earlier this year\, resisting the federal government’s violent tactics and providing spiritual and material care to those impacted. On Tuesday\, you can hear more about how local leaders responded effectively to these challenges and learn about the roots of this resistance—roots that go back more than a hundred years to the time when Dakota/Lakota people fought for their survival against the federal government and Dred and Harriet Scott challenged their enslavement. \nWe’ll begin with a panel presentation by United leaders\, have a time of reflection\, and then travel to local places of remembrance and resistance\, including Bdóte; the Whipple Federal Building; George Floyd Square\, where Rev. Dr. Julia Starr Brown (’23) will lead a meditation; and the Renee Good and Alex Pretti memorial sites. You will learn about Minnesota’s practice of “neighboring\,” the ongoing struggle to offer pastoral care to detainees\, community members providing care and mutual aid\, and the outpouring of generosity that continues today. Frank Picard\, and members of the Picard family. The purpose of the lectureship is to explore questions and issues concerning the state of the creation from theological and ethical perspectives. The lectureship seeks to raise questions such as the relation between our spiritual life and the state of the natural world\, and the response of religious leadership to the decline of the planet. In establishing the endowment\, the Picard family especially wishes to remember the deep appreciation for God’s creation they shared with the late David and Roland Picard.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Generous Congregations Seminar
DESCRIPTION:United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and the MN Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC) are delighted to offer a one-day workshop on congregational fundraising\, a partnership made possible by a denominational grant. On Saturday\, November 7\, registration starts at 8:30 AM\, and the seminar begins at 9:00 AM. \nCultivating Generous Congregations maps the new landscape of religious giving and stewardship and provides tools to build a culture of generosity unique to each congregation’s needs and challenges. As the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving says about the training: \n“We invite you and your ministry team to participate in a seminar experience that could change the way you and your congregation approach giving and generosity. Cultivating Generous Congregations (CGC) is an interactive seminar offered… in partnership with denominational or network organizations\, demonstrating how pastors and ministry leaders can unearth and energize congregational generosity by exploring the significant and necessary steps to creating lasting cultural change within a congregation. Interactive segments of CGC explore theology\, the role of adaptive leadership\, fiscal transparency\, and the importance of donor care\, with action steps to impact the exploration and experience of generosity for both laity and clergy.
