SUMMARY:Social Transformation Lunch—Easter as Uprising
DESCRIPTION:“There has been a tendency to spiritualize resurrection\, softening how radical and disruptive an act of resistance and justice it is. Some of our ancient spiritual forebears bore witness to the empty tomb as an uprising\, an ongoing\, embodied witness of getting up again and again in resistance to all that opposes abundant life.” Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis. \nJoin us after Chapel on Thursday\, April 9\, for a lunchtime conversation with Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis between 12:45 and 1:30 PM. Rev. Dr. Davis will lead a conversation reflecting on “Easter as Uprising.” Bring your own lunch and join the discussion in the Intersection on campus or on Zoom. This event is hosted by United’s Social Transformation Program and its Leadership Center for Social Justice. \nRev. Dr. DeWayne Davis is ordained by the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches and has served as the lead minister at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis\, with expertise in social justice analysis\, advocacy\, and organizing. As an adjunct professor at United\, he teaches “Preaching and Your Public Voice” and “The Formed and Transformed Leader.” Rev. Dr. Davis is also a member of United’s Board of Trustees. \nJoin us online at 12:45 PM CDT on April 9 at this Zoom link. >

SUMMARY:Justice and Joy: Empowering Religious Support for Trans Lives
DESCRIPTION:In a time when trans lives are under direct attack\, LGBTQ leaders are pushing back and inviting more allies to speak up about our religious identity. Join other people of faith at United—on May 30\, 2025\, starting at 9:00 AM—to learn how to lift your voice effectively in large and small ways that are authentic to your beliefs and tradition. We are delighted to share that we will be hearing from many important voices in this discussion\, including Rabbi Arielle Lekach-Rosenberg\, Rabbi Heather Renetzky\, Rev. T. Michael Rock\, Rev. Dr. Ry Siggelkow\, Allison Connelly-Vetter\, Chelsea Boyden (’25)\, and Rev. Dr. Rebecca Voelkel (’13). \nWe will remember what our traditions teach about affirming diverse genders. Then we will learn practical ways to take action at the legislature\, in public forums\, and with our faith communities. There will also be plenty of opportunities for networking and celebrating with others whose faith calls them to work for trans liberation. \nHere’s the schedule for the day: \n\n\n\n9:00 AM\n\nOpening Ritual/Workshop\n\n\n9:30 AM\n\nWelcome\n\n\n9:40 AM\n\nOpening Address: Why We Are Here\n\n\n10:20 AM\n\nBreak\n\n\n10:30 AM\n\nFaith-based Small Groups\n\n\n11:30 AM\n\nReconnect and Share\n\n\n12:00 PM\n\nLunch\n\n\n1:00 PM\n\n  \n\n\nHow-to Workshop \n\nCreating an Op-Ed/Communications\nConnecting with Elected Officials\nOrganizing Your Family or Faith Community\nCreating a Trans-Inclusive Ministry Setting\n\n\n\n\n1:45 PM\n\nHow-to-Workshop\n\n\n2:30–3:00 PM\n\nClosing and Next Steps\n\n\n\n  \nAfter the day’s activities\, join us for Queer Prom. SUMMARY:Embodying Solidarity with Indigenous People by Becoming Kin
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Twin Cities Repair Community for Makoce Ikikcupi (Dakota Land Recovery)\, Sarah Augustine will present a lecture\, “Embodying Solidarity with Indigenous People by Becoming Kin\,” on Friday evening\, April 4\, 7:00–8:30 PM at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. This hybrid talk is open to the public at no charge; doors open at 6:15 PM. Sarah is the executive director of the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery. She is Tewa (Pueblo)\, and is leading a national and international movement for justice for Indigenous peoples.  \nSarah\, who is an author and activist\, calls everyday Christians to organize alongside Indigenous land and water protectors\, and to direct our life energy toward dismantling the Christian Doctrine of Discovery—the basis for U.S. and international laws and policies that uphold colonization and remove Indigenous Peoples from their lands still today. Sarah’s voice is a prophetic one for these times\, speaking from her perspectives as an Indigenous woman and activist\, an “internally displaced” person\, a trained sociologist and systems thinker\, and a Mennonite Christian. Come listen\, learn\, and join this movement for cultural and structural change. \nNOTE: As of April 4\, we no longer have any onsite registrations available due to space limitations. Please register to attend online. Thank you! \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Connection\, Care\, and Conscience: Voting Our Values
DESCRIPTION:As an American people\, we are facing an important decision in November when we vote to elect the next President of the United States. We are living in a political moment that has produced fear and anxiety for many. With the election looming in the midst of political polarization\, it can be tempting to simply pick a side (red or blue) because we feel like we are supposed to\, or worse\, withdraw from participating in the political process altogether. \nAnd yet\, as people of faith and values\, we remain responsible for embodying ethical leadership as we engage diverse communities and the wider public. Join us for a non-partisan conversation as we explore the values and commitments we bring to voting and our community work. The event includes a workbook that you can use to examine your own beliefs and decisions.  \nWe hope you can join us in person or online through the link below.

SUMMARY:“Radiance of the Body: Spirituality in the Art of Keith Haring” | Faculty Lecture with Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis
DESCRIPTION:Artist Keith Haring used multiple symbols to convey spirituality in his art\, most commonly a series of lines to depict radiance\, which were applied to everything from the Christ child in his nativity to explicit images of sexuality. Angels appear darting about in all kinds of circumstances\, as do crosses\, priests\, and other religious symbols. What does this broad application of holiness to a wide range of subjects tell us about Haring’s understanding of spirituality? \n\n\nHosted in the art gallery of Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church\, this talk by Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis will explore Haring’s religious background and his liberated and freeing view of sexuality and spirituality. We will look at examples in the current show\, Keith Haring: Art is for Everybody at the Walker Art Center\, as well as other examples of Haring’s work.\n\n\nRev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis\nAssociate Professor of Christian Ethics and Social Transformation\, Program Director for Social Transformation\nRev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis is an associate professor of Christian ethics and social transformation supported by the McVay Endowment and the director of the Social Transformation program at United Theological Seminary. SUMMARY:Organizing in the Spirit of Accompaniment | 2023 Symposium Week
DESCRIPTION:As part of Symposium Week (October 23–25)\, United is hosting a public-facing event on Tuesday\, October 24. In this lecture and workshop\, Dr. Ry Siggelkow\, Director of the Leadership Center for Social Justice\, and Ricardo Pérez\, artist-organizer of the same\, will explore what contemporary organizing lessons we can learn from prominent Black civil and human rights activist Ella Baker\, the work of the 1960s’ Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)\, and the Mexican Zapatistas (also known as the Zapatista Army of National Liberation). After introducing these figures and movements\, they will lift up and elucidate some of the common principles and practices that might inform efforts related to “organizing in the spirit of accompaniment” today. \n\n  \n\n \n\n\nFacilitators\nDr. Ry Siggelkow\nRy O. Siggelkow\, Ph.D.\, (he/him/his) is the director of the Leadership Center for Social Justice. He earned his PhD in Theology and Ethics from Princeton Theological Seminary and previously served as the director of Initiatives in Faith & Praxis at the University of St. Thomas where he taught courses at the intersection of race\, class\, and gender with a focus on migration\, the abolition of borders\, and theologies of liberation. An ordained Mennonite minister and former pastor of Faith Mennonite Church (Minneapolis)\, Ry has been actively involved in grassroots community organizing for several years alongside Spanish-speaking undocumented people. He is co-founder of Pueblos de Lucha y Esperanza (Peoples of Struggle and Hope)\, a faith-based\, women-centered\, and immigrant-led organization that seeks to build power in the community so that all people have a place to belong\, a place to stay\, and a place to grow. \nRicardo Pérez\nBorn and raised in Mexico\, Ricardo (he/him/his) is a self-taught mixed media artist with more than 15 years of creative experience who now lives in the Twin Cities. Partial to watercolor and ink\, Ricardo has recently created murals to reflect a spirit of collaboration with marginalized communities and lift up those whose voices need to be heard. In August of 2022\, Ricardo was announced as The Leadership Center for Social Justice’s new artist-organizer in residence.
