DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Twin Cities Repair Community for Makoce Ikikcupi (Dakota Land Recovery)\, Sarah Augustine will present a lecture\, “Embodying Solidarity with Indigenous People by Becoming Kin\,” on Friday evening\, April 4\, 7:00–8:30 PM at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. This hybrid talk is open to the public at no charge; doors open at 6:15 PM. Sarah is the executive director of the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery. She is Tewa (Pueblo)\, and is leading a national and international movement for justice for Indigenous peoples.  \nSarah\, who is an author and activist\, calls everyday Christians to organize alongside Indigenous land and water protectors\, and to direct our life energy toward dismantling the Christian Doctrine of Discovery—the basis for U.S. and international laws and policies that uphold colonization and remove Indigenous Peoples from their lands still today. Sarah’s voice is a prophetic one for these times\, speaking from her perspectives as an Indigenous woman and activist\, an “internally displaced” person\, a trained sociologist and systems thinker\, and a Mennonite Christian. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Trans Biblical: New Approaches to Interpretation and Embodiment in Scripture\, a new collection of wide-ranging essays published by Westminster John Knox. The book explores key issues animating trans-biblical interpretation from a variety of angles and emphases. Contributors\, who represent a range of gender identities\, answer the question—“What makes a biblical reading trans\, or a trans reading biblical?”—in diverse and exciting ways. They also promote new ways of thinking about gender variation in the ancient world while more sensitively and critically addressing ongoing debates about gender and embodiment.  \nSeveral editors (including United’s adjunct faculty\, Melissa Harl Sellew\, ThD\, along with Dr. Joseph A. Marchal and Dr. Katy Valentine) and contributors (including United’s core faculty\, Rev. DESCRIPTION:United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in St. Paul are jointly sponsoring a lecture by the highly esteemed American theologian and ethicist Rev. Dr. Gary Dorrien. The free event will take place at 6:30 PM on September 25\, in the main church at St. John’s and be live-streamed on St. John’s YouTube channel. \nDorrien\, the Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary and Professor of Religion at Columbia University\, will base his lecture around two of his recent publications: Anglican Identities: Logos Idealism\, Imperial Whiteness\, Commonweal Ecumenism and the autobiographical Over from Union Road: My Christian-Left-Intellectual Life. Both books have a 2024 publication date. \nIn Anglican Identities\, Dorrien offers a comprehensive historical examination of Anglicanism\, encompassing the faith’s longstanding proclivity toward ecumenicalism and idealist approaches. He also argues that the religion’s aspirational ecumenical vision is directly antithetical to English Anglican’s entanglement with colonialism and white supremacy.  \nOver from Union Road\, on sale September 30\, is a rich memoir that describes Dorrien’s unlikely journey from being an academically inattentive high school athlete to becoming a renowned social ethicist\, theologian\, and intellectual historian. The book also covers Dorrien’s participation in the civil rights movement and other social and cultural upheavals during his lengthy career.  \nDorrien will also participate in United’s Fall Convocation on September 26 as he joins us to celebrate the installation of his former student\, Dr. Demian Wheeler\, into the new Sophia Chair in Religious and Theological Studies. SUMMARY:“Radiance of the Body: Spirituality in the Art of Keith Haring” | Faculty Lecture with Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis
DESCRIPTION:Artist Keith Haring used multiple symbols to convey spirituality in his art\, most commonly a series of lines to depict radiance\, which were applied to everything from the Christ child in his nativity to explicit images of sexuality. Angels appear darting about in all kinds of circumstances\, as do crosses\, priests\, and other religious symbols. What does this broad application of holiness to a wide range of subjects tell us about Haring’s understanding of spirituality? \n\n\nHosted in the art gallery of Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church\, this talk by Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis will explore Haring’s religious background and his liberated and freeing view of sexuality and spirituality. We will look at examples in the current show\, Keith Haring: Art is for Everybody at the Walker Art Center\, as well as other examples of Haring’s work.\n\n\nRev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis\nAssociate Professor of Christian Ethics and Social Transformation\, Program Director for Social Transformation\nRev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis is an associate professor of Christian ethics and social transformation supported by the McVay Endowment and the director of the Social Transformation program at United Theological Seminary. He earned his PhD from the Graduate Theological Union in Interdisciplinary Studies in addition to a Master of Divinity degree at Harvard Divinity School and a Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary. \nAs a pastor\, he served congregations in Boston\, Honolulu\, and San Francisco and was Director of Leadership Development for Metropolitan Community Churches; he is now with the United Church of Christ. \nIn his prior work\, he served as Managing Director at the Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion (CLGS) and directed communications for the Hawai’i Equal Rights Marriage Project\, the National Center for Transgender Equality\, and Out & Equal Workplace Advocates. He has taught at the University of Arizona\, Pima Community College\, Iliff School of Theology\, and Pacific School of Religion. DESCRIPTION:We are beyond excited to announce that United will host award-winning drag songwriter and singer\, Flamy Grant\, for a performance on April 10 at 7:00 PM.  \nBillboard-charting artist Flamy Grant\, describes herself as a “shame-slaying\, hip-swaying\, singing-songwriting drag queen from western North Carolina.” Her 2022 debut record\, Bible Belt Baby\, was nominated for best pop album at the San Diego Music Awards\, reached the top spot on iTunes Christian Charts (a first for a drag performer)\, and was named as one of the Top Ten Queer Country Albums of 2023 by Rainbow Rodeo Magazine. “Good Day\,” a single from the album\, debuted at number 20 on the Billboard Christian digital sales chart.  \nAmong other accomplishments\, Flamy won the 2023 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition\, was nominated for a 2023 QueerX award\, and has been featured in Rolling Stone\, Entertainment Weekly\, and People. Her music has more than 750\,000 streams on Spotify\, Apple\, and Amazon music. Much of Flamy’s music focuses on the queer spiritual journey with stories of resilience and recovery from religious trauma in a world where LGBTQ+ people are too often ignored by\, harmed in\, or ejected from religious spaces. \nRev. DESCRIPTION:Practitioners and pastors who are engaged in chaplaincy and spiritual care are invited\, now more than ever\, to consider how their role as spiritual care providers can support social justice efforts within their institutions and communities. \n“Chaplaincy & Reproductive Justice: A Conversation on Intersections\,” led by Rev. Dr. Jessica Chapman Lape\, creates space for spiritual care providers\, chaplains\, and chaplaincy students to explore the intersections of spiritual care and a critical and timely topic in social justice: reproductive justice. The reproductive justice framework advocates for a person’s right to have a child\, the right to not have a child\, and the right to raise children in safe and healthy environments. In this presentation\, we will explore how the reproductive justice framework informs the spiritual care practices of professional spiritual care providers in healthcare and community-based settings. \nRegister below. \n\n \n\nPanelists\nRev. Jess L. Chancey • MDiv\, BCC\nRev. Jess L. Chancey (they/them) originally hails from Atlanta\, GA\, where they earned their Master of Divinity at Columbia Theological Seminary. They completed their chaplain training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia\, and they now serve as staff chaplain at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul while also completing their Doctor of Ministry work at United. Jess developed a passion for advocacy through their own experiences of struggling for acceptance and inclusion as a queer minister with a disability\, leading them to serve as Co-Chair of UCC Disabilities Ministries and on the planning team for the LGBTQ+ peer network at Regions. When Jess isn’t working\, you’ll likely find them watching Star Trek\, writing their dissertation\, or doing an Out of the Darkness walk with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention\, accompanied by their trust pup Macy. \njessica young chang • MFA\, MDiv\njessica young chang (she/her) is excited about growth and transformation in individuals and communities through creative\, embodied\, mystical\, and collective spiritual practices. Originally from Ohio\, jessica has a background in Performance Studies (Northwestern University) and Creative Writing (MFA\, Columbia College Chicago). jess started practicing yoga to help her deal with the trials and stresses of college. Her teaching is informed by vinyasa and Tantric traditions\, and she has taught in community\, for-profit\, and private contexts for years. Before entering spiritual study\, jess served as a collective member and board member at Chicago Women’s Health Center. Having cultivated a career in performance\, writing\, yoga and reproductive justice\, a calling toward the intersection of embodiment and spiritual practice led jess to earn a Masters of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School. jess is pursuing ordination in the United Church of Christ\, and is currently serving as a staff chaplain at Massachusetts General Hospital. \nRev. Latishia James • MDiv\nRev. Latishia James (she/they) affectionately known as Rev. Pleasure is a Black queer femme\, womanist culture change agent\, facilitator of healing spaces for QTBIPOC women + femmes and writer. A Master of Divinity and Certificate of Sexuality+ Religion graduate from Pacific School of Religion they currently serve as Co-Director for Organizational Development at Spiritual Alliance of Communities for Reproductive Dignity (SACReD) where she works to make Reproductive Justice a lived reality through liberating religious education and organizing people of faith. Latishia is ordained in The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries and is a certified healing-centered coach. Like the true womanist she is\, she “loves music. Loves dance. Loves the moon. Loves the Spirit. Loves love and food and roundness. Loves struggle. Loves the Folk. Loves herself. Regardless.” \nRev. Jude Johnson • MDiv\, BCC\nJude (he/they) joined All-Options in June 2023. He is a Board Certified Chaplain and Minister in the United Church of Christ (UCC). Jude received their Master of Divinity degree from Pacific School of Religion (Berkeley\, CA)\, with a focus on the intersections of sexuality and religion. Jude completed their internship\, residency\, and fellowship for chaplaincy in VA hospitals – specializing in spiritual trauma\, LGBTQ+ spiritual care\, transgender-competent provider education\, and holistic mental health. Other work from Jude includes writing camp programming for children and adults at Pilgrim Pines Camp (Yucaipa\, CA)\, and educational workshops on sexuality\, gender identity\, and queer theology. \nRev. Dr. Jessica Chapman Lape • PhD\, MDiv\nRev. Dr. Jessica Chapman Lape (she/her) is assistant professor and program director for interreligious chaplaincy. Jessica received her PhD in Practical Theology from Claremont School of Theology where she earned the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence and the Jack Coogan Award for the Creative Use of the Arts in the Life of the CST Community. Jessica’s research inhabits the intersection of spiritual care\, healthcare\, and reproductive justice. Her dissertation\, missTreated: A Womanist Clinical Pastoral Theology on the Mistreatment of African American Women in U.S. Healthcare\, explores Black women’s perception of cultural violence in U.S. healthcare systems and the subsequent role of spiritual care in interrupting such violence. Jessica’s current research is working to expand paradigms of clinical spiritual care to include contextualized spiritual care practices such as Black indigenous birthwork. As a trained community birth doula\, Jessica works to integrate traditional African American birthwork and midwifery practices into her clinical chaplaincy. She has been a chaplain for faith-based nonprofit organizations\, and a healthcare chaplain specializing in areas such as palliative care\, women’s health\, community health\, and perinatal care. Jessica is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ\, a staff chaplain at Regions Hospital in St. Paul\, MN\, and a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Incorporated. She lives and plays with her spouse\, J.D.\, their little one\, Johnathan\, and their rambunctious yet curmudgeonly senior dog\, Andie.

SUMMARY:Organizing in the Spirit of Accompaniment | 2023 Symposium Week
DESCRIPTION:As part of Symposium Week (October 23–25)\, United is hosting a public-facing event on Tuesday\, October 24. In this lecture and workshop\, Dr. Ry Siggelkow\, Director of the Leadership Center for Social Justice\, and Ricardo Pérez\, artist-organizer of the same\, will explore what contemporary organizing lessons we can learn from prominent Black civil and human rights activist Ella Baker\, the work of the 1960s’ Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)\, and the Mexican Zapatistas (also known as the Zapatista Army of National Liberation). After introducing these figures and movements\, they will lift up and elucidate some of the common principles and practices that might inform efforts related to “organizing in the spirit of accompaniment” today. \n\n  \n\n \n\n\nFacilitators\nDr. Ry Siggelkow\nRy O. Siggelkow\, Ph.D.\, (he/him/his) is the director of the Leadership Center for Social Justice. He earned his PhD in Theology and Ethics from Princeton Theological Seminary and previously served as the director of Initiatives in Faith & Praxis at the University of St. Thomas where he taught courses at the intersection of race\, class\, and gender with a focus on migration\, the abolition of borders\, and theologies of liberation. An ordained Mennonite minister and former pastor of Faith Mennonite Church (Minneapolis)\, Ry has been actively involved in grassroots community organizing for several years alongside Spanish-speaking undocumented people. He is co-founder of Pueblos de Lucha y Esperanza (Peoples of Struggle and Hope)\, a faith-based\, women-centered\, and immigrant-led organization that seeks to build power in the community so that all people have a place to belong\, a place to stay\, and a place to grow. \nRicardo Pérez\nBorn and raised in Mexico\, Ricardo (he/him/his) is a self-taught mixed media artist with more than 15 years of creative experience who now lives in the Twin Cities. Partial to watercolor and ink\, Ricardo has recently created murals to reflect a spirit of collaboration with marginalized communities and lift up those whose voices need to be heard. In August of 2022\, Ricardo was announced as The Leadership Center for Social Justice’s new artist-organizer in residence.

This panel\, titled “Reorienting Ourselves to the Reality of Not Yet\,” will be facilitated by Rev. Dr. Gary F. Green II\, United’s director of anti-racist initiatives and assistant professor of pastoral theology and social transformation. \n“Reorienting Ourselves to the Reality of Not Yet” is a public event that officially launches the second wave of United’s Anti-Racist initiatives\, which includes a focus on student formation and public engagement. This evening features a curated panel conversation that highlights the unique contributions of two scholars-activists who are engaging in the work of anti-racism through comedy and the Arts\, and who will engage each other in a way that offers a unique angle of vision into the nurture of white supremacy and the possibilities for life in its wake. \nThe panel and public conversation will be preceded by an original production that presents United’s vision for this work\, explains the unique approach we are taking\, and features the voices of faculty speaking to their commitment and creative engagements with anti-racism in their teaching and scholarship. This public panel conversation officially launches United’s second wave of Anti-Racist Initiatives\, kicking off a programmatic reorientation focused on student formation and a series of public panel conversations that creatively disrupt white supremacy and collectively envision life in its wake. \nKeep reading to learn more about our panelists! \n\n\n \n\nPanelists\nDr. Danielle Fuentes Morgan\nDr. Danielle Fuentes Morgan is an associate professor at Santa Clara University. She specializes in African American literature and culture in the 20th and 21st centuries and is interested in the ways that literature\, mass media\, popular culture\, and humor shape identity formation. In particular\, her research and teaching reflect her interests in African American satire and comedy\, the arts as activism\, and the continuing influence of history on contemporary articulations of Black selfhood. As a professor at Santa Clara University\, she teaches courses in the Department of English and the Department of Ethnic Studies. Danielle has written a variety of both scholarly and popular articles and has been interviewed on topics as varied as Black Lives Matter\, race and The Twilight Zone\, Black sisterhood in sitcoms\, the satiric reappropriation of negative tropes\, laughter as revolution\, race and sexuality on the Broadway stage\, and Beyoncé. Her book\, Laughing to Keep from Dying: African American Satire in the Twenty-First Century (published Fall 2020 by University of Illinois Press as a part of the New Black Studies Series)\, addresses the contemporary role of African American satire as a critical realm for social justice. She is currently co-editing The Oxford Handbook of African American Humor Studies (Oxford University Press) with Dr. Brittney Michelle Edmonds in addition to working on her second monograph. \nDr. Green writes\, “Danielle’s engagement with comedy and satire as a form of social justice makes her the perfect conversation partner for this event\, particularly because comedy is a centerpiece to the design of Anti-Racist Initiatives at United. As a designer and illustrator\, her work focuses primarily on race\, identity\, and social justice. She advocates for positive change in her community using creativity as tools of community activism and organizing like her solo intersectional exhibition\, Umbra\, and her community distro project\, Stop Killing Black People. Terresa is the Creative Director at Blackbird Revolt\, a social justice-based design studio. She is also an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design and the Director of Design Justice at the University of Minnesota’s College of Design. As a community engaged scholar\, her design research interests include; Project Naptural\, which creates spaces to educate\, connect\, and empower Black women about their natural hair and self-identity\, and Racism Untaught\, a curriculum model that reveals ‘racialized’ design and helps students\, educators\, and organizations create anti-racist concepts through the design research process. She has multiple publications including two books set to publish in October 2023 through MIT Press\, Racism Untaught and An Anthology of Blackness. \nDr. Green writes\, “Terresa’s focus on embodying anti-racism through art is brilliant and will be featured\, but it is her attention to design—how white supremacy lives in the details and/of design—that I want to invite her to unpack for the public to hear and engage. Green II\nRev. Dr. Gary F. Green II is United’s assistant professor of pastoral theology and social transformation and director of anti-racist initiatives at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. He earned his PhD from Brite Divinity School\, where he focused on issues related to young African American men through the lens of public pastoral theology. His dissertation\, “Playing the Game: Unmarking ‘Beast’ from the Bodies of Young Black Men\,” is a project that seeks to humanize young black men by allowing their voices to challenge stereotypical scripts that cast them as “beasts” for public consumption. His broader research interests involve raising consciousness to issues of race\, masculinity\, and power\, particularly when these issues are uniquely disclosed in spaces that are often overlooked by the Church and the Academy. Gary is committed to highlighting neglected sources in his research as a way to prioritize the revolutionary potential of voices that have gone unheard. His ultimate goal is to contribute to theological perspectives that can more adequately undergird sociopolitical redress for oppression in marginalized populations in the United States.
