Film Screening of ReMembering: Singing Water
Online
On Tuesday, March 1, United will screen One Voice Mixed Chorus’ ReMembering: Singing Water, produced by Blue Moon Productions.
ReMembering is an original choral film that explores Minnesota as a place of both home and exile for Indigenous people, LGBTQ people, and immigrants. Interconnected stories are brought to life through choral music, spoken word, animation, and life size puppets.

We are happy to announce that Rev. T. Michael Rock has agreed to advise our student group. Rev. T. Michael is Co-Pastor at Robbinsdale Parkway, was ordained in 1996, and has previously served as a prison chaplain. In addition, he has extensive experience working with local and national UCC churches and organizations. New students are highly encouraged to attend!

Celebrating the release of Dr. Jennifer Awes Freeman‘s The Good Shepherd: Image, Meaning, and Power (Baylor University Press, 2021), United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities is proud to invite members of the community to a special book event. On Wednesday, March 2 at 9 AM CT, join us on campus or via livestream for a discussion and Q&A with Dr. Awes Freeman, assistant professor and director of theology and the arts, and special guest Dr. Robin Jensen from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Demian Wheeler and student respondents Pat Browne and John Scheuer will also offer responses to the book. They will discuss the the figure of the Good Shepherd which never became humble or docile but always carried connotations of empire, divinity, and defensive violence even within varied sociopolitical contexts. Join us for an exciting discussion of this important historical scholarship.

In the Christian tradition, the season of Lent is a 40-day period commemorating the events leading up to the death of Jesus Christ. Oftentimes, Lent is regarded as a time for sacred and meaningful reflection on our own spirituality and spiritual journeys. This Lenten season, join Dr. Sabia-Tanis and Dr. Chapman Lape for a Lenten Bible Study. We will communally engage in Christian theological reflection using resources such as A Women’s Lectionary for the Whole Church by Wilda C. Gafney as well as the “Liberation Bible Study” podcast curated by More Light Presbyterians. The Lenten Bible Study will meet both virtually and in-person from 4:45 PM-5:45 PM on Tuesdays beginning March 8 through April 12. All are welcome.

The LGBTIQ+ Christians in Central America: Realities, Struggles and Advancements from the Heart of the Continent

Join us for a lecture from Rev. Álvaro Durán, a theologian and the only openly gay pastor in El Salvador. He will discuss the impact of LGBTIQ+ Christian inclusion efforts, initiatives, and movements in the United States and how they affect the Central American context, the urgent evangelistic stewardship of congruence with God’s radical inclusion in Jesus Christ, and the importance of networking and fellowship for the development of an interwoven mission for a fully welcoming and affirming global Church. He takes a multidimensional approach to these experiences to explore and understand the importance of the ecclesiological momentum that arises from the deconstruction of religious prejudices related to human sexuality and the current struggle to forge a liberating, healing, transformative and expansive spirituality and faith communities from the margins.

Flourishing in the Clearing: Womanist Approaches to Spiritual Care
Jessica Chapman Lape, Assistant Professor of Interreligious Chaplaincy and Program Director for Interreligious Chaplaincy
In Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved, we see the character Baby Suggs, an ex-slave and spiritual leader, facilitate healing and flourishing for her African American community deep in a forest clearing. Through the use of sources such as Black literature like the works of Morrison and Zora Neale Hurston, to the scholarship of womanist scholars and pastoral theologians, this lecture will discuss distinct and embodied characteristics and practices of contemporary womanist spiritual caregivers who work to facilitate healing and flourishing for African American women. This lecture will also explore the broad implications of inviting all spiritual caregivers into the work, awe, and abundance of womanist care – so that all Black women may flourish in the clearing.

Our group seeks to facilitate mutual support and conversation between students who are under the broad umbrella of nominally Pagan traditions or approaches. We have self-identified Heathens, Wiccans, Druids and, of course, Pagans among our known numbers. We meet on the third Friday of each month at 11:45 CT. We will also schedule some holy day observances and guest speakers throughout the term (days/times to be announced).

Meet United adjunct professor Dr. Michelle Mueller, a scholar, instructor, and student advisor. Dr. Mueller also holds a minister credential from Covenant of the Goddess. Join us on March 18 to hear Dr. Mueller talk about Pagan interactions with other religions. She will also discuss her upcoming Contemporary Paganism class, scheduled for Summer 2022 at United.
