“Giving Thanks in Many Voices” is a Thanksgiving holiday television special, produced in partnership by United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and Twin Cities Public Television (tpt), with funding provided to United from Thrivent Financial. “Giving Thanks in Many Voices” premiered on tpt on November 22.
Minnesota is ever-changing. As new groups of people come to make Minnesota home, our state is enriched by the cultural and religious traditions they bring with them. United is delighted to partner with tpt to create this television special celebrating the many cultures and faiths that are woven together to make Minnesota a great place to live. Included are profiles of Twin Cities families who have moved here from African, Asia, India and South America. These are combined with performances taped at the Thrivent Financial auditorium and spoken-word performances taped in Bigelow Chapel.
“Giving Thanks in Many Voices” reflects United’s commitment to genuine community and relationship with our neighbors of other faiths and traditions. We are proud of that heritage, as a seminary chartered by the United Church of Christ, and of our growing relationships with communities of other faiths and traditions which form the foundation for genuine dialogue and profound spiritual experience.
United is recognized as a generous and welcoming seminary where all explore the boundless possibilities of a loving and beloved community—an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood. Two years ago we began a new initiative with an interfaith and intercultural focus. Its mission is to ensure that all graduates of United are literate in multiple faith and cultural traditions so they can be trusted and effective leaders in a time of increasing diversity. Our students are moving outside the classroom to engage in meaningful encounters with others in the community, turning strangers into partners.
United is also committed to growing as a center for interfaith and intercultural encounters and understanding. Opening our doors and reaching out to partner communities, we invite the challenges that come with differences. The purpose of Interfaith and Intercultural Initiatives is to promote genuine dialogue, bold partnerships and a culture of creativity and courageous action in service to a thriving pluralistic society.
