Laurence Savett, author of The Human Side of Medicine: Learning What It’s Like to be a Patient and What It’s Like to be a Physician, practiced community-based primary care internal medicine for 30 years. For two decades, he has taught about the psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of medicine and the doctor-patient relationship in a course titled the same as his book, first at Macalester College and later at the University of St. Thomas. He has also co-taught a course at St. Thomas, “Faith and Medicine: Finding Meaning, Comfort and Guidance in the Catholic, Jewish and Medical Traditions.” A retired clinical professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School where he taught medical students, interns and residents, he has been on the editorial boards of, and a frequent contributor to, The Advisor, the journal of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions, and Creative Nursing, a journal for nurses.
