Kevin H. Komadina is an Edina-based artist and critical care physician whose sculptural work explores the interdependency of humankind and nature, as well as the universal quest of all peoples to understand their place in an expansive universe. The delicate balance of human relationship with the earth and the universe has long inspired reflection on the nature of our connection with this world we inhabit. Earth’s resources are conquered and harnessed to benefit human beings; yet nature can threaten us with the lash of a devastating wind or, with the same level of mastery, caress us with the awesome beauty of a majestic sunset. This, then, must certainly be a source of humankinds’ long-standing spiritual quest—a quest that crosses social and cultural barriers, the same journey with many travelers. “Namaste” invites viewers to experience the sculptures and reflect on their life’s journey.

Komadina says of his work, “I eagerly, humbly enter this dance with clay, wedging, moistening, throwing, and sculpting. Clay is a fundamental media, a simple material, the components of which make up 90 percent of the crust of the earth. Throughout history, clay in the form of vessel or tool was used to help sustain human life.”

This exhibit is part of the “Beauty that Speaks” exhibition.
