M.Div. Concentration in Pastoral Care and Counseling

Requirements of the Concentration

The following requirements enable students to reach the learning goals of the concentration:

In addition to achieving the basic outcomes of the M.Div. degree, a graduate of the Pastoral Care and Counseling concentration will:

  • be able to articulate the theological interpretation of human experience from her/his tradition including the utilization of religious resources endemic to that tradition.
  • be able to utilize the sacred texts of her/his tradition and the manner in which those texts inform present day ministry.
  • be able to provide cogent reasons relative to the importance of the whole community of faith engaging in this ministry.
  • be able to demonstrate how the basic functions of care-giving: healing sustaining, guiding reconciling, liberating and empowering, are integrated into the total ministry of the faith community.
  • be able to integrate the contributions of the social sciences to the issues of human brokenness, wholeness and health on both an individual and systemic level of ministry.
  • be able to identify and honor the establishment of boundaries and professional ethics as related to the work of ministry.
  • be able to understand both the need for and the path to healthy self-care as a professional in her/his personal life.
