Certificate in Leadership Toward Racial Justice
Updated 5/19/2010, 4/8/14

The Certificate in Leadership Toward Racial Justice is intended to provide clergy and lay leaders of faith communities the knowledge, understanding, and skills to facilitate antiracism transformation in congregational or other settings.

Educational Goals of the Certificate

To give students an understanding of the dynamics of racism and white privilege, especially in their systemic and institutional manifestations;
To give students knowledge of the experience and religious traditions of at least two communities of color; and
To enable and motivate students to be effective agents of change for the elimination of racism in church and society.

Requirements of the Certificate

1. Satisfactory completion of five 3-credit courses as follows:

  • TR331 Antiracism Dialogue: Theory and Practice
  • Four elective courses: elective courses may be selected from those approved for the Leadership Toward Racial Justice concentration, or students may ask a faculty member to include a track in another course that would explicitly address one or more of the certificate educational goals. Faculty have discretion to decide that tracking is not appropriate for a given course. If the faculty member agrees, some course readings and/or assignments would be tailored to allow the course to meet a concentration elective requirement. This would be noted on the registration form. Please see the registration bulletin for courses approved for the Leadership Toward Racial Justice concentration.
